SubEx Premiere: Soviet // Impalaz

Earlier this week over on his blog Jaime Falcon had a pretty revealing post which pretty much pulled back the curtain on this whole 'music blog culture' we all try so hard to perpetrate, and as hard as it is to admit, everything he said was pretty true. It is a constant struggle to fight off seemingly endless promo emails and press releases that flood the ole inbox, but we do our best to try to not get so caught up in their trends, and to stay pretty true to ourselves by only covering music we judge to be original/coming from a place of honesty.

Another huge struggle involves constantly fighting off accusations that certain bands are overhyped simply because they are local. We get it. Who doesn't root for the home town team a little harder than the rest? But for that reason we really try to judge the locals even more rigorously than outsiders, constantly asking ourselves 'would we like this band/song as much if some dude from Cleveland wrote it?'. And it is sometimes hard.

What has not been hard this week, however, is throwing praise Soviet's way. After a solid week of listening to their debut EP Forever Today in its entirety both to and from work every day we can safely come on here and proclaim it is indeed truly awesome. Especially the strong Halo Benders vibe we get from the song "Colors". The songs are short and somewhat simple but somehow manage to capture honest feelings of apathy without ever coming off as pathetic, encapsulating them in these perfect three-minute vehicles --with a few hooks thrown in for good measure.

As Mr. Schectman also pointed out in his review of the EP in this week's Dallas Observer, that due to the immediacy of the interwebs, more and more the focus for bands today is shifting to the realm of releasing EP's and singles. So perhaps it shouldn't be the most shocking thing in the world that even though Soviet's latest EP hasn't nearly had enough time to start collecting cyber dust yet, the boys have already readied a new single called Impalaz.

And just like JP Falcon mentioned in his post, we are super psyched that (for at least a few hours ahead of everyone else) we get to exclusively premiere the pair of songs. While not as instantly catchy as the four tracks on the EP, Impalaz sees Soviet stretching out its proverbial legs a bit, venturing into slightly darker territory, and hinting that they just might be big players around town in the very near future, and perhaps for a good long while after.

We especially love 'Part Two' which sees the group dealing with its sudden and growing popularity, how they've been being treated, and maybe even a bit about some of the phoniness that may or may not poke its ugly little head around the Denton punk scene from time to time. It makes lines like "Where is this killer vibe that everyone seems to have?" just feel a little more pointed.

And completely honest.
