It's Gonna Take Jeff Lynne To Do It Right Child

So James Ray first did "Got My Mind Set On You"? George Harrison's supremely popular 1988 cover version of this song has so much of Jeff Lynne's trademark production style all over it that it never occurred to me that it wasn't written by the ex-Beatle. I mean, I don't feel gipped in any way by this revelation, in fact, I think Harrison absolutely P3WNED his version, taking Ray's jazzier version and making it into a real hip-shaker. I'd even go out on a limb and say with a little more bass and a couple of 808's kids would still dance to it today. Either way, I'm glad I was turned on to this little gem, which will no doubt be a staple on my iPod the next few weeks.

Nurses Sound Like a Technicolor Dream

I'm not going to lie in order to keep up appearances that I'm some sort of big shot music critic type who knows everything about every band you've never heard of. In fact, before yesterday I was not aware that Portland band Nurses even existed. I am glad that is not the case today, as I am really digging their song “Technicolor,” the first leak from their forthcoming Apple’s Acre LP. Their kaleidoscopic sound, and spacey harmonies have me wanting to find about more about the Nurses and their brand or psychedelic pop asap.

Roy G. and the Biv LP33.TV Featurette

Roy G. and the Biv were recently the subjects of an LP33.TV featurette/interview piece. It's always a little weird for me when I see the Roy G. dudes, because driving around in my car I like to pretend I'm actually listening to a group of bellbottom-clad black gentlemen. For those who aren't already addicted to the band's feaux 70's funk sound, stick around after the main part of the video for some sample tuneage, but be forewarned, that just as the group sings, they will soon be your nicotine.

LehtMoJoe Remix of the Week

It seemed a highly ambitious goal when he started, but here we are a 3 months later with a dozen shiny new LehtMoJoe remixes. And although I'm somewhat disappointed that the journey is over, I am excited about the release of Leht's solo album "Spaghetti Western," which after all was supposed to be the proverbial pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I don't mean to close the lid on the casket prematurely, though, there is afterall one last LehtMoJoe remix of the week to speak of. Keeping up with his trend in recent weeks of taking on alternative rockers Leht sets his sights this week on the Foo Fighers' "D.O.A.". Grohl has one of those powerful rock voices that I just can't get enough of. As cool as all the synths and strings are, my favorite part is the middle chorus when everything gets stripped down, turning it more into a head-nodder/hand-clapper/fist-raiser, whatever you're more into.

Thanks Leht, it's been a hell of a ride.

An Open Letter to Weezer

My Most Beloved Weezer,

I am writing you today with serious concern. We have been through a lot together, you and I, including long hiatuses and breakup rumors but somehow we've managed to keep everything cool. Along with Nirvana's "Nevermind" you were the first album I ever purchased to play on my own pre-teen stereo. You taught me so many things about powerchords and poprock, and for this I owe you much gratitude. I pre-ordered your last four albums before they came out, read your blog regularly, own your DVD, know all of your b-sides, grew a Cuomo mustache, and sang "Jamie" at an open-mic night. Let's just say I'm a fan, to the extent that despite being somewhat disappointed by most of your output over the last 7 years I always tell myself the next album is going to be great.

So was the case in the months I waited for the red album to come out. I got so impatient I accidentally pre-ordered it twice (keep in mind these were both after purchasing the Pork and Beans single). The saddest part was that I actually tried my hardest to convince my friends that the album had its redeeming qualities. Sure, "Automatic" was one of the better songs you've written in the last several years, but you also made "Heartsongs," which I feel too embarrassed for you listening to to ever make it past the first few bars. And still for some unexplainable reason I was super stoked to hear your next album has already been recorded.

Your video for "Kids/Pokerface" made me think these guys are finally getting on board with music that is cool. And then the tracks "The Girl Got Hot" and "I'm Your Daddy" leaked. Oh don't get me wrong, I will without a doubt purchase your upcoming disc in the very near future, but just between you and me, I'm not sure how long I can keep pretending. Listening to your music is starting to be like masturbating a chaffed penis: the longer you do it the more painful it becomes --and yet for some reason you just can't manage to stop yourself.

Earlier This Week: Jessica Lea Mayfield at H.O.B.

Jessica Lea Mayfield is tiny...in build, in demeanor and in stage presence. Her voice, however, is so large it can fill a room effortlessly. And, most surprisingly, she can play the acoustic guitar with a ferocity that can compete with the loudest of electric rigs. On Wednesday, I had the pleasure of expierencing her arresting performance firsthand when she played an intimate set on the small stage at HOB. Occasionally backed by her brother David and Richie Kirkpatrick (of Ghostfinger), Jessica's voice forcibly emerged from howling guitar distortions and heavy bass drum to create a cohesive yet textured sound that perfectly complements her heartbreak-heavy songs. My favorite moment of the show was her rather embarrassed introduction the standout Buddy Holly cover, "Words of Love," that was recorded for the Starbucks' Valentines Day album as well as the moody tune that followed. However, I really think Jessica shines the most when it's just the acoustic guitar, that voice and her words. The simplicity just pulls you in and holds you rapt.

Although, her material can be a bit dark and the pace very somber, I'm here to tell you that the kid is going to be okay. She seems to have both her 19-year-old feet planted firmly in the ground and her heart pouring directly into her music. And, really, what more could you ask from a girl who has only just begun.

Magnificent 7 in 7

We've done several of these 'clearing out the inbox' type posts in the past in varying formats. This time we're going to shake it up once again and give you 7 mp3's in 7 sentences (not counting these 2 of course).

1. The best of the bunch comes from UK hip-hop outfit Nine High, who deliver the most bangin' track about food we've heard in some time, set to a beat that takes us back somewhere between Biz Markie and Quality Control-era Jurassic 5.

MP3: Nine High - Cookout (M-Phazes Remix)

2. Sure we've blogged about Denton's galleryCat and posted his "Say Say Say" track before, but now his entire album is out and you can download the gem here.

MP3: galleryCat - Say Say Say

3. "I Bought My Wife On The Black Market" comes to us from a self-proclaimed greasy, homeless Sicilian who calls himself Pablo Calamari, and although we're not sure whether we should believe him or not, we dig his quirky mix of ethnic-sounding saxophones and dance beats.

MP3: Pablo Calamari - I Bought My Wife On The Black Market (Club Mix)

4. On "Hipster Crickets" LA punks The Press Fire! claim they were trying to recreate that Paula Abdul remix album but were just shitty at it, but let's face it's punk --albeit interesting punk.

MP3: The Press Fire! - Hipster Crickets

5. When you get big like Brit DJ Don Diablo you get to remix songs before they come out, which is exactly what he got to do with Mika's upcoming club-ready smash "We Are Golden".

MP3: Mika - We Are Golden (Don Diablo Remix)

6. We predict by the final chorus of "Bow Down and Die" by the Black Lips-esque Almighty Defenders, you too will be raising a warm mug of beer into the air and waving it from side to side as you haphazardly scream along to the lyrics.

MP3: Almighty Defenders - Bow Down and Die

7. Gemma Ray's new jam was first described to us as sounding like 'Norah Jones on Amy Winehouse's drugs' and we'd have to say that is pretty accurate --really diggin' that toy piano!

MP3: Gemma Ray - 100 Mph (In 2nd Gear)

And there you have it, the first (semi)successful "7 in 7" posting. Perhaps more to come?

Good Things Happen When Hammer Hits Stone

Video of our latest obsession RTB2 playing the DOMA showcase we were at at the Cavern last Saturday has found its way onto YouTube. Do yourself a solid and pick up their EP at Recycled Books in Denton or Good Records in Dallas. AND if you're like us and still can't get enough RTB2 fix, check out the latest in the DOMA nominated Gutterth Podcast series which features the boys.

RTB2 In The Fleshed

Just as Mount Righteous frequently receives erroneous associations to fellow Dallas big band Polyphonic Spree based almost solely on the number of members it has, I'm sure Denton's own RTB2 gets its fair share of fallacious White Stripes comparisons. Sure there are two of them and like the Stripes RTB2 are talented enough to make you forget all about bass instruments, but that's where the similarities end.

For one thing, judging from their raucous live performances, drummer Grady Don Sandlin could drum circles around Meg White --probably with one arm and leg tied behind his back. And while mastermind Ryan Thomas Becker is no Jack White, I would say that's a good thing. Instead he comes off as a much more sincere artist with a set of pipes so deceptively soulful that it makes you shiver, or at the very least crawls into your ears and doesn't leave for hours after you stop listening.

Their newest EP, "In The Fleshed" is a bit of a departure, however from what loyal RTB2 fans might expect. These 4 songs are much bigger and more ambitious than the bands past efforts, shying away from that 'live in-studio' sound, instead opting for more audacious arrangements, including overdubs of piano, glockenspiel, banjo among others. The standout track "When Hammer Hits Stone" best encapsulates the bands live sound, simultaneously displaying their raw energy while highlighting their instrumental dexterity. Possibly the most impressive thing is they manage to cram all this in under 5 minutes, which may not sound like a big deal until one considers that the live version rarely comes in under the double digit mark.

Weezer - The 8-Bit Album

I've heard whispers of it's existence, and this morning the rumors of an 8-bit Weezer album have been confirmed. 8-bit collective Pterodactyl Squad are responsible for the album which spans the across the entire Weezer catalog, even including a few b-sides and a soundtrack tune.

According to their site, the songs on this compilation have mostly been created using original videogame hardware running home-brew software, and vary radically in style, from minimal 'one man and his Game Boy' compositions to 8-bit inspired full band performances.

1. Island In The Sun (Belmont's Revisal) - videogame orchestra
2. Holiday - Anamanaguchi
3. MP3: El Scorcho - Tugboat
4. The World Has Turned And Left Me Here - Bit Shifter
5. You Won't Get With Me Tonight - PDF Format
6. Hash Pipe - seal of quality
7. In The Garage - OxygenStar
8. You Gave Your Love To Me Softly - :(
9. We Are All On Drugs - Rabato
10. Jamie - Unicorn Dream Attack

I Make Her Say 'Oh' When I Poke Her Face

All this time we thought Kid Cudi's latest single was called "When I Poke Her Face," an obvious but clever nonetheless play on the Lady GaGa sample he so brilliantly uses. Come to find out the song is actually called "Make Her Say" which is still fitting but admittedly makes us giggle a whole lot less. The Kid's debut full-length finally hits stores some time in September, but it's hard to believe it's his first with all the buzz he's been able to score, due largely I suppose to the fact that he wrote about half of Ye's "808's and Heartbreak" album before scoring his own huge single with "Day 'N Nite".

We have been loving this song for some time now, with our only complaint being some of Kanye's lyrics. The self-proclaimed genius raps about using his medulla oblongata to get "brain" in the library. Sure we get what he's actually talking about, but for the pun to make any sense it has to work both ways. Medulla oblongatas control things like breathing, heartrate, blood-pressure, and vomiting --nothing to do with knowledge, despite the fact that it's located in the brain. Not to keen on his 'Benz is parked like Rosa' line either, but hey that one is probably just me. Either way, Cudi, Common, and Lady GaGa are more than enough to make up for Mr. Ye.

LOLCORNELL of the Week: Birthday Edition

OK, so I know I promised last week would be it for the lolcornellz for awhile, but today is Chris' birthday AND it's also a Monday, so I thought one more batch wouldn't kill anybody. Plus killing the bit on his birthday seems much more poetic than pulling the plug on a random Monday in July, don't you think? Happy Birthday Mr. Cornell.

The Closest Things Are The Hardest To Stop Listening To

I realize I can't really write too much about this track while retaining any shred of so-called "journalistic integrity" (not that blogger's have any to begin with), as its composer Joey Kendall is a good friend of mine. But I will admit to listening to this live recording of, "The Closest Things" upwards of 20 times yesterday (true story). Not sure if it was because it's 2 minute running time allowed for that, because its so damn catchy, or because I feel the lyrics are extremely poignant and strike a deep chord in me. My favorite line: "...the only way to sing with a bullet in your teeth is to do it with a smile on your face." Whatever the case I think that something that has touched me so is worth sharing, even at the risk of appearing silly.

LehtMoJoe Remix of the Week + Spaghetti Western Art

This weeks remix offering of Nirvana's "Territorial Pissings" really shouldn't seem too surprising. He did, afterall, take on Smashing Pumpkins and The Hives in recent weeks. After he slowed things down a bit last week with Au Revoir Simone, I'm glad to see him back to electrifying my grunge --which I feel is when he's at his best. With his album "Spaghetti Western" releasing in a mere couple of weeks, I'm a bit saddened that the 'remix of the week' thing is quickly approaching its end. I am excited, however, about his FREE dance party/release event 7/31 at The Granada. Should be fun times indeed.

Speaking of "Spaghetti Western," I got the cover art and track-listing below which I am excited to be able to share. Check it out, and see you on the 31st.

Return of the Bukhan Killaz: It's Goin Down

In the doldrums of this seemingly extra long week there is only 1 thing that I think could have adequately rejuvenated me. Luckily for me that was just the thing I found in my inbox this morning. It's the inevitable return of the great Bukhan Killaz! This time the little troupe of South Koreans are taking on the Big D's own Fat Bastard and his ghetto anthem "It's Goin Down".

You can tell by the solar effects, the tilted sunglasses, and the knowing head-noddin' that the success of their first viddy is starting to go to their heads --not that we're complaining, as their level of gangsta increases so does their propensity for entertainment.

Strokes Front Man Preps Solo Release

Julian Casablancas, front man of The Strokes, is all set to release a solo album entitled Phrazes for the Young. Confirmed track titles include "River of Brake Lights," "Glass" and "Ludlow St." For an album preview check out Julian's website.

We also hear there are plans for a solo tour in the pipeline too. Wonder how this affects the Strokes' upcoming release and tour schedule? I also find it curious that Fabrizio felt the process was important enough to leave his Little Joy bandmates high and dry on their most recent tour. But Casablancas' record is much anticipated and buzzworthy so this will probably be willingly overlooked by the buzz music-consuming masses. And if it's half as good as his Lonely Island guest spot, we'll be right there with them.

Giving You What You Want

And continuing with the Amanda Blank obsession, I give you her blog. She doesn't update near as much as we do, but she has a pretty sweet video vignette posted from her recent tour with Santigold (which was phenomenal or at least the Dallas date was). Glad you guys love her as much as we do, but you're going to have to wait a bit longer for that debut album. It's been pushed back to August 4th. What a tease!

I Might Like The Remix Better

Amanda Blank's "Might Like You Better" that we posted late last week and subsequently became one of the most downloaded tracks to appear on SubEx has now gotten the remix treatment from somewhat unknown New York DJ Radio Krome. While he doesn't go overboard with tons of effects or samples which might have overcomplicated the track, he does manage to flesh it out a bit so that it doesn't sound like a Peaches b-side. The added synths also make dancing to Blank's filthy rapping a little more imaginable.

Free Stuff: The Dead Weather Edition

The Dead Weather's breakthrough debut disc officially releases today, and we've got a nice little prize pack to giveaway to celebrate. The package includes 1 "Treat Me Like Your Mother" 7'' vinyl, 1 "Horehound" CD, and 1 Dead Weather poster. Not bad, eh? First person to email me with "You better learn to shake hands" in the subject line gets the whole shebang.

Congrats to our winner.

=w=

Album Preview: The Dead Weather - Horehound

Like everything he's touched before, the Dead Weather is drawing myriads of comparisons to Jack White's bread and butter the White Stripes, and while the Icky Thump-ish guitar/keyboard tones of the two singles (Hang You From the Heavens and Treat Me Like Your Mother) do little to set from White's past projects, it is hard not to listen to the remaining tracks without noticing the group's temerity. As unusual as it may seem for White to start a supergroup without assuming fronting duties but Alison Mosshart (The Kills) proves she is more than capable. Sure her timbre is reminiscent of White's, but her intonation is so much ballsier. "Come over here pony I wanna climb up on top of you" she implores on the Dylan tune New Pony and you not only feel suddenly obliged to give her a ride, you are afraid to think what might happen if you don't. Aside from the instrumental track 3 Birds which comes off like a live studio jam added in at the last minute as filler, the remaining tracks on the disc are murderously dark and heavy gems. While "Horehound" still manages to retain the garagey-blues sensabilities of The Kills/White Stripes, it goes a step further and really demonstrates what happens when the blues get mean.

It's really one of the best overall discs I've heard so far this year, buy it here.

LOLCORNELL of the Week

I am somewhat saddened that after today the Conversations With Cornell comic strip (and perhaps the lolz as well) will be going on hiatus until further notice (pending Chris Cornell doing anything newsworthy or making more absurd career moves in the near future). If any fans of the lolcornell concept want to keep the Monday tradition alive, I will gladly post any lolz sent to subservientexperiment@gmail.com and as always the lolcornell archive will still be available via that link over in the right sidebar.

In other news, I guess this opens up a slot for a new regular feature on the blog, so if there is anything you want to see send us your ideas and we'll do our darndest to make them happen.

Artist To Watch: Amanda Blank

If you like your girly rap extra dirty, Amanda Blank could be your latest music crush. This little lady has worked with both MIA and Santigold, and her first album "I Love You" (set to be released July 19th) was produced by SubEx obsession, Diplo. Not convinced yet? The single, "Might Like You Better," contains the repeating line "I might like you better if we slept together." It doesn't get more forward than that.

LehtMoJoe Remix of the Week

LehtMoJoe's remix of the week this week is a bit different than his past offerings. For one thing the track is a yet-to-be-released offering from Brooklyn's Au Revoir Simone. The original (which I'm also including for those of you who haven't already heard) is a little more ethereal than the alternative/electro/hip-hop tracks Leht has taken on in previous weeks. What's even more interesting is that Leht restrains himself and produces a cut much sweeter and far less grimy than his usual fair.

Random Fun Fact: Leht and I recently discovered the source of Au Revoir's band name as we were taking in Pee Wee's Big Adventure and that throwaway line was delivered by Paul Reuben's loveable misanthrope as new aquantance Simone the waitress boards a train on her way to France.

Treat Me Like Your Mother

Get a free download of "Treat Me Like Your Mother," from the Dead Weather's upcoming album Horehound courtesy of this here widget. Sure you have to give up your email address, and sure you will be relentlessly spammed by Jack White and his new Third Man ventures, but I've heard the track (and the rest of the album for that matter) and it's completely worth it. Alison Mosshart is the female version of Jack White, and as White is behind the kit this go round, you end up with a much more polished White Stripes --not to mention a Queen of the Stoneage and a Raconteur tossed in to add some extra weight and grittiness.

*Edit: The entire Horehound album will be streaming here for the next 24 hours only, so head that way to see what all the hubub is about.

The Hood Internet Anthology Has More Mashups Than A Girltalk Album

A few days ago I made the suggestion that you do a search for Hood Internet on Hypem and listen to as many tracks as you could find. Why go through all that trouble when our favorite mashers have already made an imeem player with 246 of their best jam. Go here and give it a listen, as they definitely come up with some interesting combination. Our faves are still the Grizzly Bear vs. Dead Prez, B-Hamp vs. Little Boots, Chamillionaire vs. Passion Pit, Lil Wayne vs. Röyksopp, and Beastie Boys vs. Matt and Kim --although you can't really go wrong with anything they put out. Keep up with them over at their blog where you can sign up for an RSS feed an all that jazz.

Jason Bought a Hatchet Viddy

A while back we hipped you guys to the greatness of Giggle Party and their murderously fantastic single "Jason Bought a Hatchet". Earlier this week the aforementioned Jason sent me a link to the video for the song. Co-directed by Damien Weighill who has done much of the band's artwork previously, and illustrator Stephen Wake, the video captures the essence of the song perfectly. Featuring drumming Darth Vader's, keyboarding skeletons, guitarring nuns, and dancing robots, I get the feeling it is precisely what goes on at a live Giggle Party show.

It also confirms everything we said before: dudity and mass-murder aside you'd be hard-pressed to find a kid out there that wouldn't love this. While possibly considered NSFW by some, I am so in love with this viddy right now and all its wackiness.

Download their free EP, and remember to check out their live chaos on July 11 at the Lonestar Country Club.

3 of the Blogosphere's Best MJ Tribute Remixes

There's currently all sorts of MJ tributes going on lately, including a candlelight vigils, treks to Neverland Ranch to see the corpse, and screenings of Moonwalker, but what better way is there to pay tribute to such a genius musician than with --well music. 3 of Hypem's hottest remixers going have sent me MJ remixes this week in the wake of his passing, and all three are super killer and fitting displays of the genius that MJ was.

Don Diablo takes on "Remember the Time," and although he keeps the rhythm bumpin', he also gives it a bit of a dark touch that gives the track a whole new feeling now that MJ is gone.

My favorite mashup artist going, The Hood Internet, takes on Billie Jean, and throws in some Ratatat samples. Just another example of the man doing what he does. If you ever have an afternoon to kill, I highly reccommend searching 'Hood Internet' on Hype Machine and just listening to every track. He definitely comes up with some interesting pairings.

Lastly, our own LehtMoJoe whom has long been one of MJ's biggest fans, has sent us his take on "Beat It". It's mean as hell and makes me not want to be a boy but instead be a man. The 8-bit sampling also reminds us of Mike Jackson's Punchout. I highly suggest you look for that on youtube as well.

Kid Cudi? More Like King Cudi!

As on-top of it hip-hop was a few years back, it seems to me that most MC's have let their game get a little stale. Will.I.Am turned electro, Kanye turned to autotune, and even the once mighty Eminem released an album that's decent but by no means ground-breaking. The shortlist of vocalists doing anything remotely moving to me include old-schooler Q-Tip, Lupe Fiasco, and the newest it-boy Kid Cudi.

Due to his co-writing of several of the 808's and Heartbreak tracks and his popular single "Day 'N' Night" the man is everywhere. You can find him collaborating with just about everyone under the sun, and his remixes flooding the Hype Machine. And for good reason --he kills it habitually.

These latest 2 Cudi remixes that were sent to me are just 2 examples of why he is the reigning king. The first one is by our pal Dave Wrangler who remixes the "Day 'N' Night" single with some Rick James samples that give it a funkier feel. The second one I especially love. The track "She Came Along" was done by Virginian producer Sharam who Cudi had been dying to work with. The thing that puts it over the top is the prevelant Patsy Cline samples that oddly enough are what make the track sound more hip-hop than clubby. 'Ye was also pretty impressed by this, as wrote on his blog this is his new favourite song.
