Dr Dre Detox Leak?

This probably won't last, but here is the first official track off of the much-anticipated Dr. Dre album Detox. It will start appearing in Dr Pepper commercials on Monday. Hear it in full while it's still up.

Freebie Fridays

Summer. It's my favorite time of year. The days are longer, the nights are hotter and the drinking is done poolside. Since we're approaching these golden times once again, I propose a search for the summer jam of 09.

I have a few worthy canidates for you in the form of an electro-friendly, sample-heavy playlist from Nylon, the faux-hipster's magazine of choice. Listen to the mix by downloading it for free HERE. Now, I know there are some summer 08 repeats (Santigold, Of Montreal), but I think you'll find a couple of songs/artists that are new and worthy of consideration (Little Boots and Anjulie get my vote). Besides, it's free, which means more pennies in your pocket as we approach the sangria season. Happy hunting!

LehtMoJoe Remix of the Week

As if you hadn't caught on by now, SubEx pal LehtMoJoe is on a mission to remix a new tune every week until his big CD-Release show July 31st at the Granada, and this week's victim is Australian popster Daniel Merriweather.

You may be familiar with Merriweather's past efforts as the voice of Mark Ronson's Smiths cover "Stop Me". He's joined this time around by Wale for the first single on his upcoming album Love and War, also produced by Ronson.

The track retains some of the signature Ronson qualities, a nice little quirky keyboard riff, but with some of Leht's familiar attitude and banging drums thrown in to liven it up.

School of Seven Bells: Videos and Remixes

Sure everybody's been hyping the new School of Seven Bells viddy for their song "My Cabal" lately, but we have to admit it is pretty sweet. The gorgeous colours, constant camera shifts, and gratuitous use of fisheye really makes you feel like watching the band from a rollercoaster rather than a cluttered soundstage.

They'll be at Hailey's in Denton next Wednesday, and we're guessing it's gonna be pretty damn packed.

Also as a bonus check out this remix of another SoSB track by Jesu's Justin Broadrick.

Moses Uvere Shows Dallas Knows Hip-Hop

We've long been hyping Anonymous???? as the best rapper in Dallas, but we recently received some tracks from one of his peers, Moses Uvere who is every bit as talented. Like A???? his lyrics are full of positivity and markedly devoid of fowl language, and yet the production value and vocal presence are polished enough that you won't really seem to notice as you're sitting in your drop leanin' to the side.

And as if his excellent brand of hip-hop wasn't enough to win you over, a cursory scan of his bio would reveal to you a young man who grew up in poverty, helping to raise 3 younger brothers in a single-parent home, and who attributes his perseverance to his relationship with Christ. Regardless, it's a rare thing to find such a combination of talent and character.

It brings SubEx much joy to see so much rich hip-hop talent emerging in the Big D and to know that we're not all just Stanky Legs and over-hyped ghosts of PPT down here.

P.S. Check out Moses this Sat. at The Lounge, a terrific little venue on Elm.

The Virgins at The Loft Tonight

What one could use most after a 3-day weekend drink-fest is a little hair of the dog. That means catch The Virgins tonight at The Loft and officially put off the hangover until tomorrow. That is all.

More Random Facts: Fecal Matter

You know those little random factoids that appear between songs in Rock Band? I think SubEx could use some random factoids every once in awhile in between posts as well, but you'll never know when they're coming or why, hence the "random" part.

Kurt Cobain was in a band before Nirvana called Fecal Matter that also featured 2 future members of The Melvins. They recorded a 1985 demo tape called "Illiteracy Will Prevail" before disbanding. Cobain circulated the tape when searching for Nirvana members in 1986. One track in particular, "Spank Thru" caught future Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic's attention, and it later became the first official Nirvana song. A live version of the song is featured on Nirvana's "Muddy Banks of the Wishkah" album.

LehtMoJoe Remix of the Week

It may have come a little in the week, but Leht's remix of the week is still in under the wire, and his promise to remix a song per week until his album drop remains unbroken. This week's target is The Hives' "Main Offender" from their 2000/2002 breakout disc Veni Vidi Vicious. Go ahead and give it a listen as it surpases anything Pharell accomplished while producing the Swede-rockers.

Public Nudity is Soo This Summer

So we just watched the somewhat newish Matt and Kim viddy, and it looks remarkably similar to the Make The Girl Dance viddy that we posted a couple days ago. No sure yet who had the idea first, but I'm thinking we are on the precipice of a major public nudity trend that should blow up sometime around this summer -and we're totally fine with that!

It's Bigger Than Grizzly Bear

When Leht asked me last week for a recommendation for what he should remix next in his 'remix a week' quest, I initially said Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks" had my vote. That was, however, until a cursory search of the Hype Machine revealed the perfect remix had already been created. The Hood Internet threw the acapella from Dead Prez's classic anthem over the dreamy piano hooks of the Grizzly Bear tune, creating the perfect storm of hip-hop goodness.

Another Regina Release

Regina Spektor takes her lilting, magical sound to a whole new level on "Blue Lips" from her forthcoming album. On the surface, "Blue Lips" is a moody pop song that's infused with Regina's signature piano. However, interwoven themes involving the fleeting nature of life and the connectivity of humanity and the Earth take this song to a whole new level. "Blue Lips" will be packaged with the first single, "Laughing With" This special double-disc release comes out June 15th.

SubEx Be Makin' All The Girls Dance This Summer

Got an IM from Mikey who's overseas right now that just said 'This is about to blow up' and then linked me to the above video. And he's absolutely right, it brings the funk and is smartly accompanied by a risque viddy. In our estimation, Make The Girl Dance has all the makings to be this summer's Yelle. Looking back at what we danced to the last few summers (Ce Jeu, D.A.N.C.E., Harder Better Faster Stronger, most everything SebastiAn did) I guess it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that our summer jam will likely be Parisian.

Gogol Bordello Remixed

It seems as if all we ever post these days is remixes. That being said, we've got nice one this morning from our buddy IAMXL who's done his thing this time to NY gipsy-punk theatre troupe Gogol Bordello. Though admittedly we are not as familiar with Gogol Bordello as we know we should be, we do dig pretty much any band that uses an accordion, and we found their wikipedia page to be super fascinating. It's no wonder our friend Z wanted to win lifetime Gogol Bordello tickets so badly.

More Random Friday Musings

Just got back from a lunching at a local fast food restaurant. Typically when I (as a white American) place an order there, I am asked if I would like to add cheese or bacon to my sandwich. Today I noticed that when the Hispanic gentleman behind me placed his order they asked him if he would like to add cheese and jalapenos. At first I was taken aback, but he of course DID want them. I love jalapenos probably more than most Americans, but I am never asked this question. Just makes me wonder, was this a case of racial profiling, or just good business sense?

Is There Such Thing As Too Much Passion Pit?

Maybe we have already posted a Passion Pit remix this morning, but that doesn't mean the fun has to stop there. Just got a fun little track in my inbox that isn't so much electro remix as it is fun little cover/mashup by UK pop orchestra outfit The Mummers who I now must find out more about. Give it a listen, it'll instantly raise your life points by five and will make you forget you still have to wait 4 whole days for the real thing to come out... well almost anyway.

Shuttle Remixes The Reeling

We've been pretty remix-intensive this past week or so on SubEx and we've got one more good one to share. I think we (and pretty much every other blogger out there) have been anxiously awaiting Passion Pit's new disc which will be released on Tuesday. This new remix is of "The Reeling" and it was put together by Shuttle from Ninja Tunes (aka Nate Donmoyer, drummer for Passion Pit) so as you can expect it delivers some pretty big beats. It's a nice clubbier version of the track that gives Leht's a run for its money, and really whet's our appetites for the rest of the album next week.

For all you wacky Wilco heads, they are streaming the new album in it's entirety on their website. So, listen to it and report back.

Psst...non-Wilco peeps, I've heard there's noteworthy Feist appearance on this disc, so it may be worth taking a chance.

More Remixes Than You Can Shake An Ass At

It might sound weird to you, but SubEx has some new remixes to share this morning, and not a single one of them was produced by LehtMoJoe.

I got a couple of remixes of Don Diablo's "Hooligans" track that he did with Example and that has been burning up the Hype Machine lately. The first one was done by A1 Bassline, who's name I've been seeing popping up more and more lately, and the second is an obligatory Daft Punk mash-up done by Don, and although I casually threw out the word obligatory, it's still a quite danceable track.

Also in the mix is a new mashup by Houston DJ and perrenial hypem favorite Dave Wrangler, who I have still yet to book for a party, but then again I still can't afford to throw parties on a blogger's salary. He does a nice little remix of Kanye West's "Overnight Celebrity".

Lastly is a remix from the new Crystal Method album that Morrow reviewed the other day. It's by LAZRtag, so you know it's a good'n.

LehtMoJoe Remix of the Week

Keeping up his promise (so far) of producing a new remix track every week until his album drops July 31st, LehtMoJoe is back this week as he gives a nod to golden-era hip-hop with his reworking of Common's "Gladiator". There are lots of little nods along the way that all the backpackers out there will appreciate, and lots of low-end for people like us who pretty much just care whether or not we can dance to it. The key to any good remix is a great original track, and on Gladiator, Common simply kills it.

Get it Free: Led to the Sea

I've sung the praises of Amie St. before, but it bears repeating. This is a great site to discover new music on. It's a risk/reward situation in that the fewer people have heard of an album the cheaper it will be. Sure, you'll pay full price for, say, the White Stripes, but more emergent artists like Jenny Owen Youngs you will find for significantly cheaper. And to top it off, you will often find on "new music Tuesdays" free downloads, such as today's offering "Led to the Sea".

Propped up as being for fans of Regina Spektor + Cat Power + Fiest, Jenny Owen Youngs' latest single is all of those things at times. It's definitely a good song for fans of ladypop, and the best part is, of course, it's free. Check it out over at Amie St., and while you're there check out the other good cheap/free music they have to offer.

Motherlovers Digital Short

With Justin Timberlake hosting SNL this weekend, I think pretty much everybody alive was expecting a new D-in-the-B-esque digital short. What I don't think anybody was expecting was "Motherlovers," featuring the boys reprising their pervy roles and scheming about the perfect mother's day gift... I am not going to say the boys have topped themselves, but they have definitely done the impossible and delivered a worthy followup.

Deadweather Cover Art and Dates

Jack White side project Dead Weather (which also features SubEx fav Alison Mosshart of The Kills) released the cover art for their upcoming disc "Horehound" today. They have also released their tour schedule, which so far only brings them to TX for ACL in October --go figure. They would totally be worth the drive to see though, as White and Mosshart are two of the most dynamic performs around.

Chris Cornell Long Gone Video

It's a little bit curious to me that the "official" video for Chris Cornell's "Long Gone" released last week was not for the shitty overproduced album version of the track, but instead the Howard Benson remix, aka the "Rock Remix," complete with real guitars and more importantly real rocking drums. While the track still isn't quite up to the quality of Cornell's previous solo albums, it is miles closer. Could this be Cornell's first admission that Scream was a mistake? Could the LOLZ have started working (jk). Regardless, I wish Cornell would remake the entire album in this fashion, I know at least one blogger that'd buy it. And if he's not going to do that, at least put out the acapellas so some other people could do it for him.

=w=

LOLCORNELL of the Week

Due to some technical difficulties, this week's Conversations With Chris Cornell comic will not be "new" per se, but it's still new to you, which is all that counts really. Instead we are granted a rare opportunity to glance into the comic's crude origins dating all the way back to 23rd July 08. Al tells me that at the time, "Long Gone was the only song [he] had heard in full, with snippets of the other 4," and over a year later here we are, still LOLing at Mr. Cornell.

Newest Treats From SubEx Lady Favs

SubEx fav Lissy Trullie has a new video out which debuted on Stereogum recently. Check it out, she's a good as always.

Perez Hilton gives us this, the preview stream of the new Regina Spektor track "Laughing With," and Regina has more details on her upcoming release "Far" here. Definitely gives us something good to be looking forward to.

Passion Pit Remix Contest

Found a way to embed the contest app for you guys so the voting process is a little easier. Check out all these great Passion Pit remixes! Despite the fact that much of it has already leaked, I still can't wait for this album to finally drop. While you're here, might as well click the little heart next to SubEx pal LehtMoJoe's remix and help give Dallas' burgeoning electro/hip-hop-ish scene get some cred by getting Leht's remix added to the Passion Pit vinyl release.

Help a Local Brother Out

That tasty LehtMoJoe remix of Passion Pit's "Little Secrets" that we posted yesterday is apparently part of a remix contest sponsored by the band. The top 10 vote-getters will be listened to by the band, and judged on creativity, musicality, originality, and presentation, and then the 5 winners will be included on Passion Pit's vinyl release of the single. Go check it out, and while you're there you can download several good remixes of the track. The guys at the top have already had their tracks up for a few weeks, so let's all help Leht get up into that top 10.

Mount Righteous @ Rubber Gloves

It's been a minute since Mount Righteous played a show that was both local AND in a club, but that changes tonight with the return of the bigger/meaner/louder Mt. Righteous 2.0 tonight at Rubber Gloves in Denton. French Quarter, Hell-Kite, and Parata round out the nice little bill. Should be a good one. Check it out and buy the SubEx crew a round of $1 PBR's while you're at it.

LehtMoJoe's Got a Little Secret

I've been given some tasty little info by SubEx pal LehtMoJoe who tells me he has a big event planned over at our favorite venue The Granada on July 31st. He's vowed me to secrecy for the time being, but I can assure you that it is definitely big and exciting. For sure be on the look out for more info on that in the near future. To get people's electro weenies going crazy in the meantime Leht's vowed to remix a song per week until that date. Whether or not he will follow through with this hefty promise remains to be seen, but in the meantime we've been rewarded with 3 tasty remixes the last 3 weeks. This latest one is a reworking of Passion Pit's upcoming single "Little Secrets" and it sounds like nothing that either artist has done previously.

Skeet Skeet Skeet Library Remix

I was turned on to The Library last week with the release of that really slick, poppy, Maroon 5-ish, EP they put out. This week the lead single had already seen remix treatment from DJ Skeet, who puts an ephemeral Eurythmics-y twist on the already danceable gem that I could easily picture those Roxburry guys bobbing along to.

Album Preview: Peaches - I Feel Cream + Full Stream

Peaches, queen of all things subversive and sleazy, hath returned with I Feel Cream. Most notably, Peaches' signature vocal stylings (read perverse with a side of irony) are still in full effect. On "Billionaire" (one of the album's dirtiest offerings), Peaches joins forces with Shunda K of Yo Majesty for a song of which Lil' Kim, circa 2000, would be proud. Peaches also takes this opportunity to grow as an artist, as seen on the softer, synth-heavy title track. And for all those haters, she also addresses her age (the big 4-0) on "Mommy Complex" ("No one is as old school as me.") and record-standout "Show Stopper" ("Never mind my age. It's like I'm breaking out of a cage.") Yeah, she went there before you could. Deal.

In keeping with the Morrow-suggested clever ratings system, I would rate I Feel Cream 4 out of 5 of the unknown themes.

Album Preview: Crystal Method - Divided by the Night

Crystal Method, America's 90's and early 00's electronic darlings, and LA's answer to those clever British Chemical Brothers, have always relied heavily on synth-wizardry and overzealous drum loops. For better or worse, not much has changed on their upcoming album "Divided by the Night".

Meth's biggest strength has always been their superb mixing, every fuzzy Korg line has adequate space alongside chopped beefy drum lines. The full sonic spectrum is always at play, with filter cuts that move from left to right while staccato sawtooths count. Conversely, the duo's weakness has always been long, hazy song structures; songs on "Divided by the Night" meander for far too long (avg. length is 5:50 per track), and are really hit and miss regarding memorability factor.

On their new album, Crystal Method works with more guest artists than on any of their previous 3 albums, however, they should have saved their money for 1 Tom Morrello instead of the 8 bench players they enlist to carry the album. Only Matisyahu and LMFAO grab any attention, Yahu for rapping a decently cohesive and interesting message on the single "Drown in the Now", LMFAO for sucking so incredibly bad, you have to wonder how much meth he was inhaling in a suburban home at 4 in the morning, only to awaken the neighbors as he runs down the street with a flashlight, wearing nothing but overalls, looking for his missing dog.

"I take a couple shots, and feel like a vato (ayyyyy)/We be keeping it hot though, your girl is like chips, cause now she's not yours."

Moronic. Simply, Moronic. LMFAO, more like STFU. B.

After this, the album never really recovers, but instead more paddish electronica fill out the rest of the mundane track list, most of which will be featured on car commercials for years to come. As a listening experience, "Divided by the Night" is very disappointing. In a scene where more and more indie electronic artists are getting noticed and are creating new and interesting soundscapes, Crystal Method must make changes to remain relevant.

If SubEx had a clever rating system like stars or thumbs to award to new albums, "Divided by the Night" would deserve 2 out of 5 of them.

FYI: Crystal Method will be at the House of Blues on 5/20

New Anonymous????

New Anonymous???? has been a long time coming, but one of Dallas greatest rapping talents is back with what he is calling an "EP", although at 17 tracks, "Hip Hop Legend" could be viewed as more of a full-length album. It is slated to be released as a free download via his myspace page starting tomorrow. In my opinion, which isn't neccessarily worth a whole hell of a lot, I think Mr. A???? didn't want this to be called his full-length debut due to some issues with some of the levels in the final mix, which leave a little to be desired. Not to worry, though, as from what Anonymous???? tells me he has been doing a lot of collaborations as of late and he also has another EP and a mixtape in the works. Already one of the best vocal talents in the area, he is quietly becoming one of the most prolific as well. If this guy ever nails down a solid BS-free producer, I think he could really blow up.
