Lay That Cable

Before I begin, let me first go on record and say that I believe 2009 will be a breakout year for New York DIY outfit Action Painters.

You probably remember the seductively silly faux retro porn promo clip hyping the release of Action Painter's "Lay That Cable" EP that we blogged about a while back. The 3-song EP, out today, was recorded very quickly without all that overdubbing and overproduction that can bog down and delay an album's release. The EP also serves to tie us over a little longer while the full-length (which "Supermarket" will be the lead single of) is being recorded and given the special treatment. Even better news, for a limited time the band is giving fans a chance to download the tracks for free.

The band plans on making videos for all three tracks, but for now enjoy the video to "456" and see how we became so smitten with Action Painters in the first place.

Further Proving Amanda Palmer is a Badass

Amanda Palmer issued a plea to be dropped from her label, Roadrunner Records, in song form at a recent Fort Lauderdale performance. She also asked the audience to post the video of the aformentioned song, titled "Drop Me" on YouTube. On Sunday, she twittered about the event and provided a link to the YouTube posting. No word on Roadrunner's response, but I'm sure you'll hear about it straight from Amanda herself. No publicist approval needed!

On the Hunt

Time to issue the restraining orders and beef up security. One of my ultimate girl crushes, Jenny Lewis, will be in town June 23rd at the Granada. Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon.

Jenny, I'm coming for you.

LOLCORNELL of the Week

As many of you know, Chris Cornell was in town this weekend playing at the House of Blues. Let me tell you that he was utterly fantastic (as usual). While he typically plays plenty of Soundgarden tunes on tour, he was pulling out some early stuff the other night, including the grinder "Jesus Christ Pose". And although he made us wait exactly an hour after the forgettable opening act, and teased us with 3 false entrances, he more than made up for it with a nearly 3-hour set. It's amazing how well that man is still able to sing and also the caliber of musicians he tours with. The way they seamlessly transitioned from the "Spoonman" drum breakdown into an extended solo and then into a verse of Zeppelin's "Good Times, Bad Times" and then right back into the ending of "Spoonman" was more enough to make it up to this blogger for all the Scream tunes they played. I was also surprised find that the groups of cougars, AARP members, stoner kids, and frat boys not only knew all the words to hits like "Gasoline" and "Rusty Cage," but of all the Scream tracks as well (which I will admit that although still bad, weren't nearly as terrible as the album versions). All around Chris puts on one of the greatest live shows going, and I will continue to see him every single time he comes to the Big D.

And now without further ado, this weeks lolz...

Which Watson Would Ya?

For some time now I've been struggling with the following schoolboy supposition: which Watson Twin is hotter? Are you a Chandra fan, or more of a Leigh person? Can you even tell which is which? Would you, like me, rather be the bologna in a Watson sandwhich? Either way the fact remains these ladies have dynamite voices and I am severely bummed that their current tour with M. Ward doesn't yet have a Dallas stop. Tulsa, OK is only what, 4-1/2 hours away? I for one think it would be worth it.

England Dan 1948-2009

I woke up to the sad news this morning that area legend Dan Seals had died Wednesday morning of cancer. As half of the 70's duo England Dan and John Ford Coley he released one of my all-time favorite songs "I'd Really Love to See You Tonight". Aside from being one of the greatest songs ever, it's album cover was legendary for it's mustachioed majesty, and its lyrics among the most misquoted.

Let me clear this up once and for all, it's "I'm not talking 'bout moving in, and I don't want to change your life..."

Dan also managed to forge a nice career in the 1980's singing country tunes, including the massively popular crossover hit "Bop" and the controversial "They Rage On" which deals with an interracial relationship in a small backwoods town.

And yet no matter how successful he was, I haven't read an obit yet that hasn't had to shoehorn in the fact that Jim Seals (from Seals and Crofts) was his brother. I won't do that here, other to mention that the duo were currently working on a project called Seals and Seals, and they had finished 8 tracks before Dan's death --which I hear will see the light of day in the near future.

Farewell England Dan, a true mustache pioneer, and a legend in my own mind.

We Love/We Steal

So what if we're not the first blog to post this track, when the Abstract Poet speaks raps, SubEx listens. Q-Tip is joined on this Renaissance remix by Consequence and Kanye, who momentarily gives the autotune a rest. It's chill tracks like these that remind us why The Renaissance was one of our favorite albums of 2008, and why we think Mr. Tip might be challenging Michael McDonald for the title of "King of the Smooth".

Cornell @HOB

I've done some pretty serious blogging about Chris Cornell as of late and for those non-Cornell fans I apologize that 30% of the most recent posts center around the former Soundgarden frontman. Truth be told he is one of my favorites and I've been a bit obsessed lately. Just let me beat you down with these final two bits of info and I swear I'll take it easy on future Cornell posts (other than the LOLZ that is).

Chris Cornell is playing at the House of Blues this weekend, and ticket buyers will receive, if they choose to accept it, a free copy of Scream.

You can also read more of my thoughts on Cornell over on the Dallas Observer's site.

New Camera Obscura Video

It's no secret that I definitely have a thing for chicks in bands with almost no exceptions. Which is why I personally enjoy the video for Camera Obscura's "French Navy" from their forthcoming disc "My Maudlin Career". The video is somewhat travel-oriented, and the playful couple (at the risk of coming off soft) gives you that 'I want to fall in love all over again' vibe.

And good news for those of us who weren't lucky enough to catch one of their many SXSW sets (or not rich enough, or not brave enough to fight through the crowds) they will be back at the Loft on 6-16!

LOLCORNELL of the Week

Special LOLCORNELL announcement, today on this the 23rd of March we celebrate the 50th LOLCORNELL ...great job!

SXSW Recap

Alright, guys. I experienced some technical difficulties while at SXSW. Namely, my iPhone crashed. So, I apologize about the sudden drop off of SXSW-related posts. I'm back in Denton, however, and ready to dish.

Best Moment
I found myself (alright, alright, I shamelessly pushed my way through) about 5 rows from the Hold Steady on Friday night. Their energy was contagious, their sound was spot on, plus they seamlessly combined tunes from their first disc with stuff off the more recent, critically acclaimed sophomore effort. What more could you ask for?

Worst Moment(s)
Waking up in a one-bedroom apartment with 10 other people, fighting my way against the drunk masses on 6th Street, running across town in a vain attempt to get in as many bands as possible

Missed Opportunity
Laura Marling - She and I were just never able to cross paths. I'm sure she's devastated.

Bands to Watch
Elizabeth & The Catapult - Silly name, serious sound. This female-fronted band from Brooklyn represents the very sweetest of pop.

Langhorne Slim - Rock and soul fuse into a unique groove that moved the crowd at Club de Ville.

SubEx Recommends: SXSW (Thursday)

Welcome to day two of SXSW.

For a strong start to your evening, may I suggest Nellie McKay, a SXSW veteran who is playing at 7 on St. David's stage. Whether centered on a broken heart or politics, McKay always infuses her lyrics with a sense of humor. At 8, SubEx favorite Gabriella Cilmi is sure to wow the crowd at La Zona Rosa with her smooth growl and throwback sound. Also sharing the 8 o'clock time slot, the actor turned DJ turned singer, Anya Marina, who takes the stage at The Pariah. Marina pairs simple acoustic guitar riffs with handclaps and electronic bursts for a fun pop treat. Then make your way over to Ace Lounge at 9 to experience the Vivian Girls, an all girl trio that brings the best in lo-fi rock. At 10, Esther's Follies hosts Sgt. Dunbar & the Hobo Banned, an uplifting group that is 9 members strong. If you're into 80's new wave, try out The Pains of Being Pure at Heart who are also playing at 10 on the Opal Divine's Freehouse stage. Amanda Fucking Palmer, my latest and greatest obsession, is slotted at 11 at the Centra l Presbyterian Church. If you are not as enamored with Miss Palmer as I am (what the hell is wrong with you?), indie darling and all-around cutie Andrew Bird is making the ladies swoon over at Stubb's. Women, another SubEx fave, is starting their set at midnight on the Mohawk stage. If you're looking to begin your Friday by dancing your ass off, check out Passion Pitt at Emo's Main Room. They combine electro with a live band for a sound that really can't be defined. My final suggestion for the evening? Check out Priestess whose beat-driven Southern rock has supplied the soundtrack to many Denton house parties. They play at 1 on the El Sol y La Luna stage.

SubEx Recommends: SXSW (Wednesday)

If you're in Austin for SXSW this week, I'd like to help you weed through that gigantic list of potential musical experiences by offering up a few recommendations. At 8, Pink Nasty, a local act out of Austin, opens the festival on the 18th Floor of the Hilton Garden Inn. Nasty is the nom de plum for Sara Beck who crafts folky pop artist with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and sun-drenched melodies. Check out Lissy Trullie (a SubEx fave) at 10 on stage at Red Patio 7, or try out Ausin-ites the Weird Weeds who are playing at the Hideout. This trio writes music that weaves jazz improv with pop to create reckless perfection. At 9, St. Vincent, a Dallas artist whose sweet voice catapults across some of my favorite tunes to clean up to, steps up to the mike at the Central Presbyterian Church. Look for Laura Marling, a personal favorite who writes melancholy folk tunes, to commence ass-kicking and mind-blowing at 11 on Latitude 30's stage. Indie standout, School of Seven Bells, will begin their Buffalo Billiards' set at midnight. Also playing at 12, Phosphorescent will bring ears to orgasm at Club de Ville. This group caught my eye with a standout tribute album to Willie Nelson called To Willie. To cap off the evening, back track to Red Patio 7 to take in the hardcore sound that is The Bronx, or revisit Buffalo Billards to see Ida Marie, the next big thing in girly pop punk.

I have spoken. Now go forth and be rocked.

Interview with Action Painters

SE: Gives us a short Action Painters bio, where did you guys meet, how long have you known each other, etc.

Allison: See attached bio for the juicy details. The gist is that we all met on craigslist in 2006 and by shear luck have become great friends and comrades. We all wanted to get along with each other and enjoy each other’s company above everything, since we devote every free minute to this project.

SE: Where did the name “Action Painters” come from, did any of you have a background in art, etc.?

Allison: Tom is very arty and he came up with it. We had booked our first show at the Annex in NYC back in June of 2006 and still didn’t have a name. So we all gathered at a bar with a list and decided to pick one that we all didn’t hate. Since Action Painters had nothing to do with Dungeons and Dragons it got my vote.

My favorite part of the name is that it celebrates the act of making art – not just the finished product. The journey of this band for me is about the strategy, comradery, and live performance as well as what you hear on the CD, so it fits.

Our newest member Ray Heekin (on bass) was an art student, and will be drawing some of the animation you will see on our newest video for “Supermarket,” which we’re shooting this weekend.

Tom: A lot of us have art backgrounds. Like Allison said, Ray went to art school, I went to film school, Allison just wrote a novel and is also a makeup artist, Joe (guitar) comes from a family of artists and is really into web design stuff, and Amit (drummer) was a ballerina in Teaneck, New Jersey in the 1990's. But the name is just a name in the end. Interpol the band had nothing to do with international police forces even though Carlos D wore a gun belt for a while.

SE: There are some obvious disadvantages to being a completely DIY outfit, but what are some of the ways you feel that it has benefited you guys?

Allison: I think the best part is creative control and getting to be our own boss. We get to decide everything – album art, which singles we release and when, which shows we book, which bands we play with, tour schedule, photographers, web site content, promotion, t-shirt design, etc. And the added bonus is being able to work with our creative network of friends in NYC. For example our friend Jesse Mclean designed our t-shirts, and our friend Jason Whalen shot the cover for our Live EP coming out this month and is working on our new video as well. We feel fortunate to be part of such a collection of hard working talent in NYC.

Tom: It's benefited us in pretty much every way. We all share a vision for what we want this band to be, and no one stands in the way of that. At some point we will sign with a label and we'll let them do the leg work, but for now we're building this thing exactly the way we want and thinking long-term. It's pretty intoxicating to challenge yourself to do more than you think is humanly possible. Also, in fairness, Allison is the most organized human being I have ever met, so that helps.

SE: Do you feel like the whole DIY aspect lets you connect more directly with fans/the scene?

Allison: I think so. We have to have our hands in everything and are so attuned to the response from our music since we get the word out ourselves. If we see someone has an AP track up on his or her MySpace, we’ll send them a CD. If we see a band play and dig their sound, we’ll introduce ourselves and try to book a show together.

Tom: Yes definitely. I feel like people who like our music tend to be people who we would want to hang out with anyway. You tend to share the same sensibilities.

SE: With no booking agent or promoter you managed to sell out the Mercury Lounge in NYC, a) how were you able to accomplish this, and b) to what do you attribute your success?

Tom: Working our asses off, playing good songs, promoting like crazy and wearing tight jeans.

SE: You guys are currently planning a big spring/summer tour, where all will this take you/do you think you will make it down to our neck of the woods?

Tom: Not this time. This is unfortunate because I love Austin and Tex-Mex. The highlight of SXSW last year was the tacos, hands down (well that and seeing Matt Pinfield's bald pate everywhere I went). Our tour this time around is going to be Northeast, Mid-Altantic and Midwest. We'll be doing way more later in the year, so most likely we’ll be in Tex. You guys are really lucky with the taco situation down there.

SE: I have to say that the YouTube video you guys posted to promote the upcoming digital release of your new live EP was one of the most creative/sexy/funny promo ideas I’ve seen in a good while, who’s idea was it to shoot a faux vintage porno clip, and what kind of response have you seen from it?

Allison: It was all Tom’s idea. We have a video camera, so he thought there was no reason not to create as much media as we can for ourselves. Plus it’s fun. We’ve been putting it out there, and the response has been really enthusiastic, except for maybe my dad who raised his eyebrow when I told him about it.

Tom: What's the point of having a girl in the band if you can't make a porno? People have been pretty into it. I think it's just so out of left field that it gets people's attention. We've got a bunch of other video projects that we'll self produce in the coming months that will be equally retarded.

SE: As of last week I hadn't heard when the official release date for the live EP was, when can we be expecting that?

Tom: The EP, "Lay That Cable", will be out on March 31st! It'll be on iTunes, on our website, all over the damn place. It also has our first ever recorded cover song. We're really excited about it. It's being mastered right now by Ron Shaffer, who mixed and co-produced Chubby Dancer.

SE: We love the single “Supermarket” from your upcoming album, what other types of sounds/surprises can we expect from the new disc?

Tom: There will be 2 albums this year. The Live EP out 3/31 is dirtier, sexier, louder, more raw, but you can still dance to it and the melodies will stick in your brain. We recorded it in one day, live, no overdubs. It was a way to capture the spontaneous act of creation. Albums take so long to finish, and we wanted to do something NOW! The video for "456", the first track, was shot live during the recording process. The disc is mostly mixed and produced by this crazy German filmmaker named Helge Bernhardt (he also worked on the video). In keeping with pretty much everything we do, it's a highly collaborative thing that involved more than one type of media, some very talented friends, and virtually no money.

SE: Do you have a title (or working title)/release date/tracklist for the new album yet?

Tom: Our second album will be out later in 2009. It's being produced by our friend and wunderkind Peter Wade. Supermarket is the first single off of that album. Everything else is top secret.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Tell Em What Your Name Is!

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears' debut full-length "Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!" is a tour de force of tightly-synched horns, funky grooves, and blistering vocals that would make even the Godfather himself proud. Black Joe's vocal stylings can best be described as 7 parts James Brown, 3 parts Mick Jagger, and with a combo like that it's no wonder that his consumate showmanship is conveyed even in this audio-only format. Sure, a lot of folks will immediately start drawing up James Brown comparisons (heck, I've done it twice already myself) but Black Joe features much fancier guitar work. On the closing track "Pleast Pt. Two" Black Joe let's out hellish wails that will have you writhing in pain along with him -- even Roger Daltrey's "Won't Get Fooled Again" scream can't compare. My only complaint is the 10 track, 30 minute, Weezer-like offering that consitantly has me begging for more.

Hooligans Never Surrender

So what if Don Diablo's new video for "Hooligans Never Surrender" has been criticized for being "too violent" I personally find it rave-tastic. It takes a video like this to make one realize how alike violent uprisings and dance clubs are, and how explosions so closely resemble sexy dancers. As a bonus, enjoy Don's latest mashup in both normal and dubstyles.

Twittergate Pt. I: A Tale of Two Twitters

Full disclosure: I have no myspace, facebook, or twitter, etc. and the reason is because I'm not 12 and I'm not a girl. I also try to live my life in the 3D world of the living things.

That being said, I think this whole Trent Reznor/Chris Cornell twitter feud is ridiculous. It really reminds me of junior high gossip. Remember when good ole music feuds would result in death, i.e. Tupac vs Biggie? Nowadays it's all e-disses and virtual tears.

What happened is this: Reznor wrote this on his twitter page tweeted the following on Wednesday: "You know that feeling you get when somebody embarrasses themselves so badly YOU feel uncomfortable? Heard Chris Cornell's record? Jesus."

Earlier today, this was tweeted by Cornell: "What do you think Jesus would twitter? 'Let he who is without sin cast the first stone' or 'Has anyone seen Judas? He was here a minute ago'"

Remember when heavy acts like NIN and Soundgarden stood for ballsiness and bad-assitude instead of the whininess of little girls with hurt feelings? Those were the days.

I Am A Golden God

It's been over 48 hours since I shaved my mountainous beard into my first ever mustache. I'm a tad disappointed that it has taken this long for someone to say anything about it, mostly because it is no ordinary stache. I have been rocking the truckerest of staches with chops to boot, and it only in the past few hours did somebody say I reminded them of Russell Hammond, lead singer of the fabled band Stillwater.

On this the slowest of news days I don't have much to offer other than an 8-bit NES-style hip-hop medley that's already been posted about a million other places, and a pretty genius Punch Out! video with that same flavor.

The Dead Weather

Further proving he's the most versatile, talented and overworked man in rock, Jack White has taken on another side project. Last night, the new supergroup, The Dead Weather, debuted at the opening of the Nashville branch of White's record company, Third Man Records.

The band unites Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Jack White (Raconteurs, White Stripes), Jack Lawrence (Raconteurs) and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age). Mosshart is the frontwoman and lead vocals, White takes both backing vocals and drums, Lawrence is on bass and Fertita wails on lead guitar. A 7-inch single of Dead Weather's first song, "Hang You Up From the Heavens," with a cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?" on the B-side, was given to all 150 guests in attendance.

White also announced that the group would release their debut album, Horehound, in June on his label (perhaps produced by White as well), and a tour is in the work.

With an established band, two side projects, various collaborations (Loretta Lynne, Alicia Keys, Beck), a record label and a young child at home, I have to assume that this man doesn't sleep....ever.

Downloads of these two songs are now available exclusively through iTunes.

Back to His Roots

Look's like Ben Kweller's not the only one who's gone country, his former bandmate John Kent has decided to toss his 10-gallon into the arena as well. Kent, you may remember, played drums in the band Radish which Kweller fronted way back when. He also can be heard pounding the skins on Kweller's first couple of solo albums as well. For the last few years he's been working on his Blackland Records label and it's pet project the Hymns. Now with John David Kent and the Dumb Angels he's back on stage, front and center this time around, belting out meaty country tunes that are more raw and authentic than Kweller's Changing Horses, but with a little more popular appeal as well. Their debut record is still in the works, but a few local stations have already begun spinning their song My Girl --which like any good Texas country song features a line about Lonestar beer. Just a heads up, they'll be over at the House of Blues' Pontiac Garage this Saturday the 14th.

Southeast Engine - From the Forest to the Sea

From the Forest to the Sea is a beautifully complex record of soulful, bluesy roots music that is as haunting as it is moving. The disc begins with a three track, 10 minute spirit-filled suite that sets the mottled tone for the rest of the album. Weaving dark moods and feelings of isolation in with the band's jangle rock serves to convey the complexity of the human condition and spirituality. While much of the album deals with divinity, it more from the perspective of a mortal succumbing to his own earthly desires and the personal growth that comes from realizing that living the American dream leads to a hollow existence compared to one's relationship with a higher power. Tracks 4-10 lead us down this hard-learned path of discovery on our quest to salvation. Reminiscent of Wilco's more country-tinged songs as well as those of Okkervil River, Southeast Engine is part gut-wrenching and part boot-stomping.

I find it fascinating that the disc was recorded in an abandoned 1800s middle school auditorium in the hills of Stewart, Ohio filled with bats and possibly ghosts, and even more so that such an epic disc only took 5 days to record, doing much of it live straight to analog. Knowing that From the Forest to the Sea was recorded in such a place in the middle of nowhere, far away from cell reception, really gives you an insight into the recording and the nature of the tracks.

Deuces Wild

Word is that MetallicA had to cancel a concert a couple of nights ago because frontman James Hetfield was hospitalized with a case of dehydration and diarrhea. Someone has posted the video on YouTube of Lars uncomfortably trying to explain the situation, though I don't think he ever drops the D-bomb.

On a more positive MetallicA note, I heard yesterday that the new MetallicA Guitar Hero game will be coming with a second bass drum pedal, because as they say, it's not really metal without double bass.

Casual Sex (Asobi Seksu) in Denton

I'm usually the least anal person in the world (this could also be read as most disorganized), but I'm really making an attempt to coordinate and plan for this SXSW. As a result, certain bands just didn't make the cut. Asobi Seksu, a catchy indie band with a female singer that occasionally writes in her native Japanese tongue, is one of the unfortunate. However, it seems that I've been given a second chance, because they will be making a Denton stop on March 22nd at Rubber Gloves. I can only hope that I'll be re-hydrated and refreshed that soon after the mayhem, because sleep is definitely not on my itinerary.

Makes Me Wanna Scream

Sure, leaks of Chris Cornell's new album Scream have been readily available via the interweb for the last few months, but now Cornell is streaming the entire thing himself over at his myspace page. For the 35% of you that will stop listening after the cheesy Superman-esque fanfare on the opening track "Part of Me," the 40% of you that hit the little red "x" after the super lame chorus ("No that bitch ain't a part of me" x4), and for the 20% of you that never even check it out, don't bother, the entire disc is just more of the same. For the other 5% of you, HERE is the link.

Give Give Give A Little More

I'm not sure what the future holds for the music industry, but I do think a lot more artists will start following in Don Diablo's footsteps, giving away tons of free tracks, building up good relationships with music bloggers, and relying less and less on labels for promotion and distribution. Speaking of which, download Diablo's newest track "Give more, Expect less" courtesy of the man himself.

Borderfest 2009

The world's largest killer bee, New Kids on the Block, a celebration of Jamaica, the Jabawockeez, international tumult, Charro, and more mariachis than you can shake a stick at will be just some of what you can expect at Borderfest 2009. Oh yea, and Mount Righteous. Nothing says "Jamaica Me Happy" like our area's own folk punk marching band.

FAILURE!!

It seems like we never win anything, whether it be painting auctions or free dinners with our favorite singers. Alas we will keep at this crazy game of life, now made brighter with our autographed BK poster (which looks like a giant version of the album cover).

On the brighter side, One Minute Pop Song Season 2 has begun (4 weeks ago to be more exact!) If you remember, season 1 revealed the recording processes behind Ben's self-titled album, highlights included a peak into his rehearsal space, a cover version of "In Other Words" sung by a Japanese fan, and BK expressing his anger over Talib Kwelli illegally using one a BK sample on his song "Mrs. Hill". Hopefully season 2 is just as action-packed. See the first 4 episodes over at Spinner's website, and then check back every Tuesday for the next 5 weeks for more.

If you're strapped for cash or don't feel like making the drive down to SXSW this year, consider stopping by Denton for NX35. This gathering is set to take place March 12-15 with events filling both the AM and PM hours. The daytime festivities include talks on various topics from art to indie rock; the highlight of these discussions being a panel by Harvey Pekar, author of American Splendor. At night, music is the main focus with 9 venues taking on multiple acts. The bands represent only the best of the local music scene and beyond with performances from Sarah Jaffe, Brave Combo, Laura Gibson, and more. Also, there will be a trade show at the Denton Civic Center that features the arts, crafts and wares of the local creative types. With a bit of every type of media represented at NX35, you're bound to find something you'll enjoy. So, come on down...and tell 'em SubEx sent ya!
