Andrew WK Piano Battle Royal

Despite owning a copy I never did really get a chance to do a full review of Andrew WK's latest solo effort "55 Cadillac". It wasn't the solo piano aspect of it that turned me off, in fact it was quite the opposite. As a kid who took piano lessons for 10 years himself I'm into the whole newageiness of it. And I especially admire the fact that a dude who's fame and success is so tied to his 24-hr party boy persona was willing to do something as daring and potentially offputting to his loyal fanbase.

Though I did find his improvised piano jams to be a pretty enjoyable listen, I suppose I was just a bit disappointed that the guy wouldn't just spend a little time and write some piano songs that would truly show off what a talented musician he is. I was further disillusioned when he pretty much went as far as to say in a Pitchfork interview that he just made the album to get out of a contractual obligation.

To me if you're going to be this huge piano guy all of a sudden then just do the damn thing! Which is why I was totally stoked to see video this morning of him bravely accepting a duel from virtuoso Gonzales. And even though Gonzales is eventually declared the winner, Andrew totally holds his own and in my eyes completely redeems himself.

Party!
