Working For The Weekend

We usually leave "it list" type postings for other more self-important folk to blog about, but there is so damn much going on this weekend we felt compelled.

TONIGHT

For you Denton folks, the best bet in our humble opinion looks to be our friends (and Mount Righteous alumni) DISCO:HATE, who are having their CD release show tonight at Rubber Gloves. Doors open at 9, and cost is $6. County Lines and New Science Projects open. Definitely has the makings of one of those interesting bills that are becoming more and more typical of Denton. Expect plenty of screaming.

For you Dallas folk the news is good and bad: Trees makes its triumphant re-opening tonight, however the best thing they can muster is Slow Roosevelt and openers Element Eighty. As excited as we were when we found out the historic venue was re-opening, we don't anticipate ever having reason to go there. This ain't your parents' Trees kids.

Your better bet, no doubt, would be the FREE show at Granada. What's even more amazing than dance rock sensations Hockey is the fact that Granada is hosting yet another free show after their Gimme Da Gold party a few weeks back. After successful appearances at the Leeds and Reading festivals they should have no trouble packing the Granada.

Homebodies don't fret, good music is a remote's click away. We kid you not, there is a Neil Diamond "Hot August Night" special tonight to coincide with the release of a Diamond DVD. No lie, we already have our TiVo set --but of course we do love the man so much we named our cat after him.

SATURDAY

Fishboy's EP release party is happening over at Hailey's in Denton. The show also will be serving as a sort of a kick-off to their upcoming tour. We reccomend heading to Hailey's, picking up some sweet vinyl, (which just so happens to be one of the better releases from the Fishboy camp in recent years) and wish the boys well as they head out of town for a bit.

Or you could always head over to the City Tavern in Dallas to catch RTB2. Like us you may have seen them a few times here recently but does one really need another excuse to catch the dazzline duo? We have loved them a little bit more every time we've caught there rauccous live show --for once a good reason for Denton folk to make the drive to the other D.

SUNDAY

Quite possibly THE show of the weekend seems to be the CD Release show the Gutterth Folks have thrown together for the Heartstring Stranglers. And as if that wasn't enough reason to attend a FREE show, New Science Projects, Ryan Thomas Becker of RTB2, Febrifuge, and Roy Robertson all perform as well. Just a tip, it's an early show and it's BYOB. You have been fairly warned. It's days like these remind us why we so often refer to it as Sunday Fun Day.
