Since dropping out of middle school in the 90's Jay Reatard has been making music and putting on live shows that have earned him a sort of "Iggy fronting the Ramones" reputation (think 18 songs in 25 minutes, etc.). On his latest release, "Watch Me Fall," however, the songs have started to become more accessible (melodies, harmonies, countermelodies, etc. what novel ideas!) and more carefully crafted. Recorded almost exclusively by Reatard in his home studio, the album retains that familiar lo-fi punk sound with Jay's cartoonishly-edgy vocals sitting high in the mix. This record may not stand the test of time or on the other hand it could be just the begining of Reatard's Iggy Pop-level career. Either way it's an extremely solid lo-fi pop punk album which one can only hope completely overshadows lesser pop punk releases this year like Bowling For Soup or reunited Blink 182.
