Playing Catchup

While we've been off Christmasing with various family-folk, the world of music has been moving forward without us. Several bits of news and mp3's of some of SubEx's favorite acts have popped up, and some out of left field as well.

First off, I received an email earlier in the week from vacationing local musician Austin Brown who is gallivanting around in Europe this week. He is posting pictures from his travels intermittently on his blog.

Next comes a random mp3 from the inbox via the little-known Belgian band Sjfëttlïch. I didn't know what to expect at first when they mentioned much of their material was in Dutch, but I found out soon that it wouldn't matter much. Their sound borders on that of a poor man's Evanescence, but with a slightly jazzier feel and not quite as hard of an edge on them. I'm not claiming they'll be the next big thing over here in the states, but their sound is interesting to say the least and worth taking a chance on (and why not, it's free?!)

Later in the week we learned that on again/off again live hip-hop act The Roots are apparently not only on again, but they've been busy. Aside from contributing the song Lovely, Love My Family to SubEx fav show Yo Gabba Gabba! (watch their performance here), ?uestlove and co. appear to be set to be the new Max Weinberg and the Max Weinberg Seven when Jimmy Fallon takes over as Late Nite host in March 2009.

Then we found out that Diplo's Mad Decent crew had gone and done it's thang to one of our favorite tracks of 2008, Of Montreal's Id Engager! Just when we thought that the song we thought we couldn't possibly like any more was starting to get played out, here comes Mad Decent to breath new life into it! This is one of those must-download tracks for fans of either of these groups, off an upcoming Mad Decent 12" release of remixes.

Then when we thought the week couldn't get any more bizarre we received one of the most rambling, incoherent emails of all time chronicling time travel and models of cars that the writer may or may not have ever owned in the eighties (we're still not sure). We'll save you all the details and just skip to the mp3 that accompanied it. Up-and-coming British remixer and self-proclaimed pop sensation Timothy London has crafted a tune that is as instantly singable as it is danceable. He manages to conjure up that same retro feel that fellow Brit Mark Ronson pioneered before him, but without the needed aid of the Daptones. Nonetheless he manages to create a memorable track that many of you will no doubt be adding to your New Year's Eve playlists in the very near future.

mp3: Sjfëttlïch - Transcend
mp3: The Roots - Lovely, Love My Family
mp3: Of Montreal - Id Engager (Mad Decent remix)

Blipster Bingo

As if I weren't on the internets entirely too much already, I just got turned on to Blip.fm, and I can already foresee myself spending hours on this site.

It's like Twitter (which I hate), but in this case your "blips" are songs and artists you share with the world, like a dj on a radio station. People can listen to your station, give you props for your fine taste in music, and reply to your songs with their own choices.

Come find my station! My name is OhhhMikey. I will play you good things.

From the Mouth of a Doll

The Dresden Dolls were one of my favorite bands while in high school and early college. Needless to say I was super stoked by Amanda's recent solo release, Who Killed Amanda Palmer? (a rock-art/cabaret piece much in the same vein as the Dolls). This week, while attempting to plan my SXSW experience in '09, I stumbled across her personal blog. Filled with video interviews and Amanda's own thoughts on everything from the recent Youtube/Warner scandal to the weather in New England, it really gives you a glimpse into her life as well as her tour. Don't miss the amazing footage from her LA show featuring Margaret Cho, a faux Katy Perry and a white wedding.

Chicken Soup for the Frozen Soul

Like a Hallmark card or a cup of hot cocoa, "Winter Song" by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Enjoy while curled up on the couch with loved ones for the maximum effect.

A Dollar Short

So what if this mp3 comes a day late, Japan's own DJ Murano, aka I'm So Look You, sent me the most adorable email offering the readers of SubEx a free "stocking filler". Her electro version of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" has all the adorable holiday gayness of the original, with just enough grime and bang in it to be appropriate for the other 11 months of the year too. Check out the viddy below, and if you likey what you hear, take the good woman up on her free DL offer.

YYYs for XXXmas

As the Holiday season is winding down, everyone's trying to crank out their Wintry-themed arsenal as quickly as they can. We here at SubEx are no different. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs posted a little Christmas tune for us at their Myspace called "All I Want for Christmas". This season, the always-adorable, never-outdone Karen O is the greatest gift of all.

What Goes Around...

No week would be complete without a rapper or dj being sued for not clearing a sample, and this one is no different. The latest imbroglio in the hip-hop legal world involves a very scarcely known South African songstress, Karma, who conveniently waited until the release of (and subsequent Grammy nods for) Weezy's Tha Carter III before filing suit -and has the stones to put the following statement on her myspace blog:

With two solo albums under her belt, "Don't Walk Fly" engineered by Grammy Award-winner Scott Canto (Shakira, Jon Secada, Nine Inch Nails, Ricky Martin) and "papercuts" co-produced by Grammy Award-winner John D Thomas (Lauryn Hill, P.Diddy, Prince, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx) plus the hit single "I Feel Like I'm Dying" with Lil' Wayne for which Karma's song "Once" was sampled and is at the center of what has been called a landmark case in a copyright law in the US, Karma is well on her way to showing the rest of the world what South Africa already knows: Here is an amazingly prolific young songwriter who is teetering on the brink of worldwide recognition.

Here are both tracks for you to pass judgment on. All I have to say is, if you are going to so blatantly and illegally rip somebody off, at least make a decent song out of it like Timbaland does.

Interview with Austin Brown

Hey Austin, what it is?

Share with us a little background information about yourself, where you're from, musical experience, non-musical experience etc.

Well…my name is Austin, I was born in Houston, and I live in Dallas. I’ve been to every continent (minus Antarctica) multiple times, traveling with my father who is in the oil business. I went to middle school in Venezuela, where I learned how to speak Spanish fluently and consequently play guitar. When I came back to the US, I started a horrible nu-metal band with my best friend Zach Jobin. After countless lineup changes, weekend parties at my parents house, and a few detentions we put a package together that worked. A Faith Called Chaos was signed to Volcom Entertainment during my senior year of high school, and we went on our first nation-wide tour that following summer: The Vans Warped Tour.

While on tour, we were invited to continue touring in Europe opening up for Rise Against, which would have been an incredible opportunity, although my parents had other plans in mind. Because I was destined to be the first person in my direct family tree to graduate college, I had to cut the party short and come back home after the tour so I could enroll at the University of Texas at Arlington.

School was dreadful. While other students anxiously awaited the professor’s lesson of the day, I was fantasizing about being back on stage in front of thousands of roaring youngsters rocking and rolling.

Eventually, A Faith Called Chaos, disbanded as most bands do who get signed too early. Our bass player had kids, our singer started collecting lizards, our lead guitarist got married, and Zach and I just got bored with the sound.

So…I started creating my own music. It took me about a year to put “Nova Dreamer” together. I wrote about 25 songs for the record and threw away 15 of them. I performed and recorded everything on the record in my home studio. I solicited the services of the magician, John Congleton, when I was ready to finalize the record.
About 8 months ago I put a band together and started playing shows; the rest has been history.

...That about brings us up to date.

You have a very eclectic style, very Beck-ish on tracks like "Galactic Virgin" and "Way Too Cool", Talking Head-ish on "Rhythm of Texas", and STP-ish on "Take Time". Where do you draw your influences from?

I am a huge fan of Beck, the Talking Heads, and Stone Temple Pilots, although the majority of what I listen to is old 60s / 70s blues rock like Ten Years After and Spirit. If I thought I could play nothing but the blues in today’s music market and still survive, I probably would. But at the same time I respect people like Beck, who can re-invent themselves with each new record, and really with each new song. So, I’ve tried to follow the same model. I understand the need to have a packaged sound, one that is easily absorbed into a general radio format. However, I treat each new song like an independent project and try to do whatever is best for the song.

What is the concept behind your album "Nova Dreamer"?

Technically, a “Nova Dreamer” is an apparatus that helps people condition themselves into a state of Lucid Dreaming. For those unlucky people who don’t know what lucid dreaming is…it is simply the act of becoming cognizant of the fact that you are dreaming, which in turn gives you the power to control the dream reality that you are experiencing while you’re asleep. I’ve always been fascinated with this concept, and so my intention was to fashion my album into a tool that could help listeners achieve a state of lucid dreaming or at least put them in a better position to achieve a lucid state.

You don't press up CD's like most artists, but propagate jump drives with your music, what gave you that idea?

It is no secret that CD sales are plunging. Not only are CD sales falling but sales of music recordings in general are lower now then they have ever been in the history of recorded music. A Faith Called Chaos always made more money from selling t-shirts, than we did from selling CD's. Historically the same has been for most major label acts as well. So…I asked myself why would someone want a t-shirt over a CD? And the answer I came up with was that people can re-use a shirt over and over, day after day. It fulfills a basic human need. My theory was that if I deliver my music in a way that adds value to the user’s life, he/she wouldn’t mind paying for music, knowing that they were getting something useful along with it.

The first time I saw you, it was opening for Eagles of Death Metal. For a fledgling band, that is a great gig to get, how did that come about? I noticed you weren't using the house mic, what was that thing?

Funny story. I have been playing shows at The Door since I was 16. Joel and Russell have always been great about helping young local bands grow. The first show I ever played at the door was on a Wednesday on the side stage. Ever since then, whenever a show with a touring act comes through (that I think my sound would be appropriate with) I email Joel, almost as a joke and say something like “Hey buddy, wink wink, put us on the bill.” Joel usually ignores my emails and books us for good local weekend shows anyways, but this time he put us on the bill. I believe the email went something like “Ah, screw it, I’ll put you guys on.”

The mic I was using was a Shure “Green Bullet”. It was actually designed for a harmonica, which is why I love it. It has a very warm, mid-rangy sound to it that you can’t re-create any other way.

You have a very charismatic stage presence, like Meat Loaf meets Ed Kowalczyk, I take it you enjoy performing live.

I would love nothing more than to be able to tour the world and play music every day. I also love doing studio work. For me, music production is as much of an art form as music creation & music performance.

Your backing band, The Sounds, are also very solid and tight, and your live set puts your album to shame (a sign of a great band), where do you hope to play next here in lil' ole Texas?

The band wasn’t put together until after the album was recorded. I think our next record will be our breakout record, because it will have all live instrumentation on it and should capture the energy of our live show.

I am going out of the country for awhile; I should be back in the middle of January. We will start playing shows as soon as I get back. I think we have one booked at Club Dada on the 22nd of January. We also have some other big things in the works that I would love to tell you about, but I’d have to kill all you so I’ll wait.

Chili or potato soup?

Chili baby! This is Texas.

Word on the street is that you are looking for someone to play the keys in your band. What would be the best avenue for a talented keyboardist to get in touch with you, showcase their proficiency, and possibly join your ensemble?

If you don’t suck…call me: 469-877-5336

Have any interesting plans for the holidays?

I am going to Dubai for a couple of weeks to see my father. I fly through Amsterdam on the way back to the US, so I think I’ll stop and stay a week there as well.

Thank you for your time A-Dizzle, let us know about any new shows and recordings, you are the one 2 punch!

Free DL's from Green Label Sound

Honest to God, I've never tasted Mountain Dew in my life. I think the past 25 years of my life have gone pretty smoothly without ever trying it, so I have no intention of starting now. However, the Dew's music venture, Green Label Sound, has just done us a solid by releasing three tracks from artists for free download.

First up is Kuroma. Click on his name to download the below song, "In New York, Everything Is Tropical":

Cool Kids, one of my favorite hip-hop acts, give us "Delivery Man" in both its original format AND the 9th Wonder Remix. Just my opinion, but that remix is SMOOOOOOV. Here's the original:

Lastly, indie darlings Matt & Kim give us "Daylight", which really gets moving when the drums come in around the 19-second mark. If this is telling of their new stuff, I'll be a happy duck:

Keep in mind that Matt & Kim will be in Dallas on 03/07/09 at the Granada Theater. I can only assume you'll be there.

We'd just give you the download links, but there's a couple agreement screens you have to click through before you can take the songs. Don't fret, it doesn't take but a second. Keepin it legal, people!

Nice Try Shazam

As most people know (due to the overabundance of tv ads) that Shazam is probably just about the coolest application they make for the iPhone. Out in public somewhere and want to know what song is playing over tha PA? --Bam!! just Shazam it and it gives artist, album name, cover art, link to purchase on iTunes, and link to watch video on youtube. Generally the app works fine, but for whatever reason it will sometimes throw you a random, totally unrelated, sounds nothing like what's on, bit of gold.

So was the case recently when I tried to Shazam the 'Chariots of Fire' theme song (which I ultimately had to remember on my own). For some unknown reason Shazam tossed me this little gem from 1979, and I can't say I'm too pissed about it.

This forgotten track featuring the vocals of Randy Crawford made it to the top 20 on three different Billboard charts back in the day, but like most people what I really remember it for was the Jackie Brown soundtrack.

A.C. Newman Strikes Back

Our good friends at Matador gave us a special Christmas present this year. They sent us a leak of A.C. Newman's new album Get Guilty. It doesn't even come out until January 20th, 2009. Six whole weeks? Now THAT is a proper leak! Well, until Inauguration Day comes and you can purchase it for yourself, or you get your grubby little hands on it in other unconscionable methods of which we do NOT approve, we'll give you a little taste.

The only details I know so far: It was recorded during the summer of 2008 at Brooklyn's Seaside Lounge with Phil Palazzolo. Guest musicians include: Jon Wurster (Superchunk/ Mountain Goats), Mates of State and Nicole Atkins. I can already say I'm pretty sure I like Get Guilty more than his wildly-praised 2004 release The Slow Wonder. And that's saying a lot-- Slow Wonder was one of my favorite records of 2004. In the next couple weeks, we'll review the entire album properly, but for now, take these new tracks:

MP3: A.C. Newman - Submarines Of Stockholm

MP3: A.C. Newman - There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve

The "Maybe Ten or Twelve" track is generously available off A.C.'s website, where you can PRE-ORDER the album. If you pre-order, you get $3 off the CD price, AND you can immediately download Newman's cover of the Go-Between's "Love Goes On".

Enjoy!

Anonymous???? - Signing Out

This just in, another b-side from Anonymous????'s upcoming debut album. This track, called Signing Out, has the best rapper in Dallas summoning three different voices -and not just with the three different timbres he uses on the chorus, but with the three different styles he uses on the verses. Verse one sounds like typical D-town fair, then verse two hearkens back to that mid-90's No Limit-style, and then finally the last verse has the Pleasant Grove native sounding like a member of the ever-expanding Wu Tang family. Blazin produced the cut which Anonymous???? said was originally intended as the last track on the album before they decided to go a different direction. Like I said before, if this is the stuff that didn't make the album, I can't wait to find out what kind of gems did make the cut.

My Favorite Fruit

Just caught word of this California duo; don't have much back story yet. Pomplamoose is Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn, a pair of DIY bedroom recording artists who've only been at it for 5 or 6 months now. Either way, their charm and talent will surely get noticed by someone much more important than me. I'm just doing my part to get their name on Google and Hype Machine at least one more time. They're worth it.

Dawn's voice is incredibly quaint on the ears (and she ain't so bad on the eyes, either). Her vocal style is akin to that popular Feist-y/Cat Power-ish/Yamagata-esque timbre. But she's no rip-off mockingbird; this is her natural state. Just play a track, and you'll hear how effortless (but not lazy) she is in conjuring melodies.

As their many Youtube "video-songs" demonstrate, the pair covers all the instrumentation in each song, but keep it subdued enough for the vocals to own the focus.

Here are a couple of their videos, followed by an MP3 to download:

Pomplamoose - "Twice as Nice"

Pomplamoose - "La Vie en Rose" (Edith Piaf Cover)

MP3:
Pomplamoose - La Vie En Rose (Edith Piaf Cover)

Visit their Myspace page to purchase ALL of their songs for only $6. Worth it. Believe that.

-Mikey-

PS: Check out Nataly Dawn's solo music and videos as well, they're delicious.

LehtMoJoe - Johnny Jazz

Another leak has come our way from the much anticipated LehtMoJoe album. This one, titled Johnny Jazz, doesn't feature the SebastiAn-esque micro sampling we heard on previous leak Tom Petty but it's still a pretty nice track nonetheless. For me, the track really starts clicking at :40 mark, and then once the devil scream comes in at :55 there's no turning back. As far as I've heard the full album is still set for release sometime in January.

Art Conspiracy IV

The chilly weather couldn't stop Art Conspiracy 4 from taking place on Saturday evening; in fact, it only served to keep the Red Stripe colder, and the crowd friendlier as we all kept huddled together near the few scattered patio heaters.

The Chameleon Chamber Group used their midi controllers and electric instruments alongside traditional strings to bring a new twist to popular classical pieces. Surreal and futuristic, the synth-heavy quartet evoked an aural nostalgia for A Clockwork Orange. The only non-classical piece, The Beatles' Because didn't sound out of place at all among the rest of the set-- after all, it received the Chameleon Chamber's usual cheesy-yet-always-terrific-treatment.

Aton's performance can best be described with this video.

The Mount Righteous took the stage shortly after our favorite painting (Andrea Roberts' piece) was caught in a fierce-but-friendly bidding war (SubEx did not win, sigh). Even in the cold, Mount Righteous was able to fill the empty warehouse on Gulden with copious amounts of warmth. The band was able to shake things up a bit, opening with a version of Sea Man in an unfamiliar meter that managed to keep the audience on its collective toes. The band played a very tight set and most of those packed into the venue seemed to be digging it. The only semi-somber moment in the set came when Mount Righteous bass drummer/organizer Joey Kendall announced that guitarist/accordionist Justin Spike would be leaving the group to focus on his other project Har Herrar.

"It's a sad thing, but it's a happy thing," he proclaimed before leading the crowd in a "Good-BYE Jus-tin" chant, and dedicating Living to Succeed to his fellow band mate.

After the announcment, the lyrics of Spike-penned tune had new significance. The line "I'll be leavin', I'll be leavin,' I've got everything to see..." was never more apropos and sincere than it was Saturday night.

Their performance went out with a bang, however, with members of the band jumping off the stage and ending their set dispersed amongst the crowd.

After Mount Righteous left the stage, the most intense bidding for art took place, with several pieces going for $200-$300 (and some higher). SubEx once again had its eye on the terrific piece by Mount Righteous percussionist Nicole Marxen, but alas we are just bloggers and not multi-hundredaires.

After this event, I have to sing the praises of Art Conspiracy. First and foremost, the organization does amazing things for the community, in terms of supporting arts and new media education in the Dallas area. But on top of their philanthropy, they allowed us to freeze our asses off in an abandoned warehouse somewhere in the seedy part of downtown Dallas, and have an amazing time doing it. So often it's easy to focus on the Dallas numbed by Botox, the Dallas that charges $9 for a beer or the Dallas erecting condos on top of mom 'n pop businesses. Art Conspiracy reminded us this town is not yet creatively bankrupt. We've got a lot of talent here, and we're not afraid to use it.

Some great photos from the event (below) are taken by the newest SubEx contributor/photographer extraordinaire, Laura Sliva.

Not much I can say about Art Conspiracy 4 that the poster above hasn't already said, but I think it's going to be good times. What the poster doesn't mention, however, is that Nicole Marxen, cymbalist/percussionist/vocalist of local collective (and SubEx favorite) Mount Righteous will be one of the artists creating a painting this year right before your very eyes. Marxen and the rest of the Mount Righteous crew will also be performing, and to top it off, the whole thing will benefit charity!

Cooking With SubEx: The Campaign

1 cup dance-able beats
4 handsome gentlemen
1/2 cup sing-along friendly lyrics
1 quart badass keyboard moves
a dash of nonconformity (hello, Blackstreet cover)

Combine for a musical treat that's sure to thrill all palettes. Enjoy
whenever possible (i.e. at 8.0 in Forth Worth on January 8 or Granada
Theater
on January 10).

Note: When I happened to see The Campaign play at Hailey's a week ago,
I was blown away. It was by far the coolest local show I've seen in
awhile. Their audience was fully engaged in the music, and the vibe
was so uplifting. You really need to catch these guys in a smaller
venue before they leave the DFW for bigger, better and Leno-y things.

LehtMoJoe - In Da Christmas Club

Now that we're officially into December I suppose it's time to make like all the local radio stations and post nothing but Christmas music until the 2nd week of January. All kidding aside, I do have one soon to be holiday classic to post. So what if this mashup of In Da Club and Wonderful Christmastime is a couple years old by now, it's still one of the best holiday remixes going, and after all this time I'm still fascinated by the way Leht manages to throw a 60+ year-old Brit into the same Christmas party as a 33 year-old former drug dealer, and somehow both emerge at the end of the night pouring each other eggnog and exchanging white-elephant gifts. What I'm getting at is that it sounds like a weird combo, but for whatever reason it just works -and works damn well.

About Last Night: Deerhunter @The Loft

Deerhunter was bustin' some eardrums over at The Loft last night. Check out the review of the show I wrote for DC9 here.

...and a ton more pics from last night can be found here.

Deerhunter Tonight @The Loft

Mikey done told you about this a couple of days ago, so I'm not going to do too much re-hashing. I'd just like to further push you in the direction of attending the Deerhunter show tonight at The Loft. They're good, the place is intimate, you know you'll rub shoulders (literally) with the band as the walk through the crowd to get up on stage, Stereogum recently called Deerhunter front man Bradford Cox, "...one of the most enthralling, dynamic performers in music today," and you know you need to do something nice to yourself after you had to put up with your family this past weekend.

...and who knows, this could be your last chance to catch them, as the extraordinarily skinny Cox is bound to fall over any second and shatter.

X-Mas Gift Idea

Digging that bizarrely annoying little instrument from the above video? That little beauty is a stylophone, and the Raconteurs (who used em on a couple songs on Consolers of the Lonely), are getting rid of all the stylophones from their merch booth that didn't sell during their most recent tour. Pick em up at their website, and then throw it in the stocking of that musician in your life that seems to have everything but the kitchen theramin.
