JAPATTACK! Anoraak Remix

Another quick post and remix for you while I'm still in Italy (the country, not the city in TX). JAPATTACK! remixed Anoraak's 'Nightdrive With You' awhile back and I'm just now getting around to sharing it. I know I'm a little late in the game, but it sounds a bit different from most of their other remixes - less grime, more airy-cloud pop. Not much else to say about it that It's The Money Shot hasn't covered already.

Freeman Hyundai has been driving me crazy lately. They have taken one of my all-time favourite songs and worked it into their radio spots. This I don't have a problem with, I know Kenny Loggins has to eat and after the Caddyshack theme song I've given up on debating whether or not he's a sellout. What annoys me is two-fold: first it is the cheesy manner in which the commercial was written...

Announcer: When is the perfect time to come to Freeman Hyundai?
Loggins: This is IT!
Announcer: That's right, this IS it.

And that's just the first 5 seconds. Other than that I would say the sheer number of times per day that it plays on 1310-AM drives me crazy. The song is so damn catchy that I have to sing it completely from start to finish every damn time I hear it. ....the waiting is ooooover. Just about the time I finish singing it we're back to another commercial break. I am not getting anything done this month. What blog is sick of your commercial Brad Thomas at Freeman Hyundai? That's right THIS IS IT!

KOL - Only By The Night

Kings of Leon's much anticipated ONLY BY THE NIGHT is out today. Go buy it now and make me jealous, as I won't be back in the states until Oct 3rd to pick up my copy. I have heard several tracks from the album that has been posted on various blogs and it appears that those of us who were disappointed by the somewhat weak (by KOL standards of course) Because of the Times, will be much happier with the Kings' latest effort.

For those of us who have been anxiously awaiting the release of the new Bond flick Quantum of Solace solely to hear the Jack White/Alicia Keys duet during the opening credits, it appears that the future is now. A new Coke-Zero advert (below) is already using the instrumental from the track, and according to a recent Paste Magazine article Jack White is none too pleased. Also like them we are wondering how he could get so angry when he himself has worked with Coke so amicably in the past (below the below).

Red Letter Year

Two of my favorite musicians are visiting the Granada in Dallas this month; Ani DiFranco tonight and Neko Case the following week (9/27). DiFranco favors political tomes over peppy acoustic guitar, while Case's gravely voice adds depth to poetic lyrics. Join me at the Granada -I'll be the red-headed girl scream/singing in the front row.

My producer buddy Lehtmojoe (from Dallas) recently invited me to his studio to check out some unfinished tracks from his upcoming (yet untitled) album. It has a broad spectrum of tracks on it, from pop and rap, to more techno sounding stuff. Arguably the best track from the album, is tentatively called "Tom Petty". It is a really hot almost SebastiAn meets Public sounding track. Hope you enjoy. I will keep you updated on the progress of the album, etc. as soon as that info makes itself known to me.

Texas Flood

Party was a success I must say, there was a dinosaur, a dj, and more brands of beer than I could count. M.I.A, - missing in action

In June when M.I.A announced onstage at Bonnaroo that this would be her last performance, the rumor-mill and blogosphere starting churning in a worrisome fashion -especially once video of the performance (below) confirmed that M.I.A did in fact utter those words. Although many people (myself included) have been hoping that this was just her fatigue speaking (she cancelled the rest of her tour just prior to the announcement) and that in a few months time she'd get the itch again, it appears this will not be the case.

However, a recent article from Paste magazine M.I.A said she has no plans to ever tour or perform again and that she is definitely not recording any new songs. She also indicated she would like to get a career in acting started up.

Many people (I call them "white people") are wondering to themselves how could M.I.A do this!? Her song Paper Planes has been blowing up after it's inclusion in the Pineapple Express trailor (though oddly not included on the soundtrack). I contend that this is precisely the reason she called it quits. Many people simply cannot cope once they are accepted by the white masses (see Rage Against The Machine). Once they get ahold of you, the unique and rebellious nature of your music is lost, the lyrical content flies over their heads. Take for instance these lyrics from Jimmy:

When you go Rwanda Congo
Take me on ya genocide tour
Take me on a truck to Darfur
Take me where you would go

...they just doesn't have the same impact once a room full of teenage girls are shouting it out while grinding pelvises with some dude who is wondering why the M.I.A would be singing about that stupid movie about that gorilla that knew sign-language.

I would say that a good rule of thumb is that if you ever end up on this blog, then it probably IS time to call it quits, no matter what your profession is (Sorry Conan).

But I wouldn't worry too much, because we all know how long these early "retirements" usually
last (see Jay-Z, Brett Favre, Michael Jordan, etc.)

'til 2 Show

Of all the places to look for the best music show in north TX, the local sports station is the last place one would expect to find it, but starting this past weekend Robert Wilonsky (of Dallas Observer fame) hosts his new music show on The Ticket, which can be heard locally on 1310-AM or streamed online here. The show which will feature tons of local bands and other indie music can be heard Saturday nights from 11PM-2AM. There will be no music directors or stuffy consultants looking over his shoulder, just Robert playing whatever the hell he feels like at the time. Like all good things that happen in this town it may not last long, so I highly recommend that you catch it while you can.

Rumble Strips

BoingBoing's BBtv music feature has a new interview/performance by up and coming Brittish act The Rumble Strips. (Watch it here). Their 2007 release Girls and Weather (buy it here) is just starting to gather some buzz on this side of the Atlantic. I'd advise catching them as they tour the U.S. this fall while they are still playing somewhat more intimate venues than they will the next time they'll be stateside.

Street Justice

Of course I realize that Street Justice has been out for eons (in blog years) but I can't help dance when I watch the video for it. And I am in an even dancier mood than usual this weekend because it is my last weekend to be working the night shift. Also it takes a lot of swagger to remix your own track, but why not do it when you have the skillz to back it up?

of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping is now available for pre-order (here). Pre-orders ship September 29 and the album will be in stores October 7.

Alas I Cannot Swim

Even though Laura Marling has a vagina and plays guitar, her debut, Alas I Cannot Swim, is anything but chick lit for the music crowd. Unlike other female vocalist, Marling remains firmly planted on the ground. She doesn't speak of love or hope, only loss. Lyrically, a melancholy theme of mental illness, death and loneliness prevails ("Oh I jumped into your grave and died,/And on my word you'll give up your whole life for me "), while a gorgeous string section and acoustic guitar solos highlight Marling's smoky vocals. The folk-tinged "You're No God," provides the illusion of a pop-esque reprieve minus the saccharine headache. Regina Spektor fans will relate to "Night Terror" with its dominant vocal stylings over a slow build and climax of instruments. At the ripe age of 18, Marling has already set such a high standard that it will be interesting to see where her career will go from here.

Paper Trail

For those of you who have been waiting since August 12 to get the new T.I. disc Paper Trail, it is finally dropping today has been pushed back to September 9th September 30th. Most people are just mildly annoyed that they have had to wait an extra month+ to get their T.I. fix, but personally I am wondering now whether Paper Trail or Chinese Democracy will be released first. It may sound far-fetched, but at least Axl doesn't have 6 months of house arrest, 1 year and 1 day of jail time, and 1,000 hours of community service (which T.I. will supposedly spend preaching to "at-risk" youth) ahead of him. Although I'm sure T.I. would argue he'd much rather be facing jail-time than be sentenced with a lifetime of having red armpit hair.
